November 15 2023

This month we are graced with the Leonid Meteor shower.  The peak is 18:19 November.   Fast, 70 kilometers per second meteors flash across the sky. This year  around 10 meteors per minute are expected.

We will discuss all the ways amateurs may enjoy the shower.

Historically, this showed is quite signiicant. Ken Burns' new documentary  "The American Buffalo" features a segment on th 1833 shower. The 1966 peak shower featured 1000s of meteors in a 15 minute period. I saw that shower. It was not possible to be looking at the sky and not see a meteor.

There are other showers to enjoy, peak rates vary from year to year. This year the Leonids are not the spectacular show but well worth the effort to learn and enjoy.
